Rintaro Kobayashi

Duke University Class of 2027

I am a student and software developer. I have a great interest in the social implementation of computer technology. I have been developing a smartphone application for elderly car drivers to assist their driving and reduce the number of car accidents in Japan. I am also interested in the intersection of computer science and political science and researched administrative approaches for promoting evidence-based policy making by the U.S. and Japanese governments.
I am a Sasakawa Peace Foundation Scholar and will attend Duke University as an undergraduate student from 2023 to 2027 with the foundation's support.

  • Japanese Representative (1 of 4), Global Cybersecurity Camp 2022 Taiwan

  • Issued by GCC Community Jan 2022

    This is a program for representative students who are very familiar with cybersecurity from Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam. I studied advanced cybersecurity skills and worked on the analysis of REvil with teammates from 8 countries; decrypted infected files by reverse engineering.

    Presented research on the new type of DNS over HTTPS system for audiences from universities and big corporations at the most prestigious global conference on security.

  • Grand Prize, 13th Science Mentor Program Research Competition

    Developed smartphone app for elderly car drivers under the support of Prof. Wada at Tokyo University of Science to reduce the number of car accidents; received ¥200000 scholarship for research and development.

Research Project: Enthusiasm for Evidence-based Policy Making in the United States and Japan

Researched the difference in administrative approaches for Evidence-based Policy Making (EBPM) between the U.S. government and the Japanese government. Interviewed Mr. Masanobu Ogura, a minister of the Japanese government, and figured out bottlenecks to solve.

Stanford e-Japan Program (Spring 2022)

Studied U.S. society & culture, U.S.–Japan relations, and its history through discussions with classmates and lectures by ambassadors, top scholars, experts throughout the United States, and instructor Waka Takahashi Brown. The program is supported by Yanai Tadashi Foundation.

Research Project: Development of a smartphone application for elderly car drivers

Developed a smartphone application with a dynamic speed alert feature and a feature to notify drivers when approaching an intersection. Implemented a notification feature so that drivers' families can see if drivers have any dangerous drives.
